Giving Back to Families Like Mine

A message from Women & Children's Council Member Kim Redmon

My life has changed profoundly in the past year since I accepted an invitation to join the Alexian Brothers Women & Children's Hospital Foundation Board. I am thrilled to be a part of this group and its mission to raise awareness, funds and visibility for the great work of the Women & Children's Hospital, particulary in light of my family's personal connection with Alexian Brothers.

Seven years ago, in my son Dean's final days of life, Alexian Brothers provided him and our entire family the most incredible care and compassion. When Dean was admitted to the hospital with respiratory issues that resulted from his struggle from birth with an unknown neurodegenerative disease, we were unsure of the severity. When we brought Dean to the emergency room, we didn’t realize we were facing our final few days with him. Throughout our ensuing hospital stay, as Dean's condition deteriorated, members of his entire care team provided emotional support beyond anything we’d experienced at other hospitals. Every staff member—from the person who cleaned our room to the technicians, nurses and doctors—treated Dean and our family with such care and respect. They took care of us in exactly the way that we needed.

In addition to providing Dean with the utmost care and compassion, they supported my husband and me as we strove to be the best parents we could while also grappling with the pain we felt in the face of Dean's suffering. Their compassion and concern extended to making sure that my mother and my husband’s parents were doing OK. At the time, our daughter Anna was five years old. The nurses and chaplains provided valuable guidance that helped us support Anna and her feelings in losing her three-and-a-half-year-old brother.

Alexian Brothers' commitment to caring for all members of our family made a huge difference to us. In gratitude for the great care we received, we designated all of Dean's memorial gifts to Alexian Brothers.

Seven years have gone by since Dean passed away. After launching my own consulting firm and having two more children, I am very pleased to have increased my level of involvement with Alexian Brothers in this past year. I am excited by the opportunity to give even more back to a hospital that gave us so much at such an incredibly challenging time in our lives.

My family is only one among thousands who have felt firsthand the healing work of Alexian Brothers. While I pray that you never have to be in a situation like we were with a very sick child, it's comforting to know that there are places like Alexian Brothers providing the best level of medical care with an equal measure of compassion right here in our community.

Thank you for making a difference in the lives of families like mine.

With gratitude,

Kim Redmon
